Introduction and general information Vacuum Blood Collection Tubes

Vacuum Blood Collection Tube is a sterile plastic or glass test tube with a colored plastic cap. The cap creates a vacuum inside the tube, which facilitates the collection of a specific volume of blood or other fluids.

It should be noted that blood collection tubes are manufactured and supplied in two types: vacuum and non-vacuum tubes. In vacuum tubes, blood enters the tube precisely according to its specified volume. Since the blood enters the tube directly through the plastic cap, there is no need to use a syringe, providing a high level of safety.

Various additives are used in the manufacture of vacuum blood collection tubes to enable the measurement of blood cell or plasma parameters. These tubes have different labels indicating the specific volume of each tube. The caps are produced in different colors, which indicate the type of additive used inside the tube.

Components and Working Principle of Vacuum Blood Collection Tubes

The operating principle of these tubes is based on the pressure difference between the blood vessel and the vacuum created inside the tube. This pressure difference draws blood through the needle and into the tube.

As shown in the figure below, vacuum blood collection tubes use a double-sided needle. The inner side of the needle is covered with a thin rubber sleeve to prevent blood leakage when changing tubes during multiple blood collection. This means that when several tubes are required, one tube can be replaced with another after it has been filled. The outer side of the needle is inserted into the vein.

The tube system also includes a needle holder made of plastic. When the needle is screwed into the holder, the inner side of the needle is positioned inside the holder.

When the tube is inserted into the holder, the rubber stopper is pierced by the inner needle, and the vacuum inside the tube draws blood through the needle and into the tube. After the blood is collected, the filled tube is removed and replaced with another blood collection tube, which is filled through the same process. The amount of air evacuated from the tube determines the volume of blood collected.

Advantages of Vacuum Blood Collection Tubes

Vacuum blood collection tubes offer several advantages, including:

  • Accurate volume calibration
  • Easy operation and an acceptable level of safety
  • Prevention of blood contamination in the environment
  • Environmentally friendly design using PET plastic tubes
  • Reduced risk of healthcare workers coming into contact with blood from potentially infected individuals
  • Simultaneous blood collection using multiple tubes with different additives
