Introduction and general information Guide Bougie
A slender surgical instrument designed for insertion into tubular body organs and passages, such as the ear canal, urethra, and esophagus. These instruments are used to measure (calibrate) the internal diameter or dilate body passages, create an easier pathway for inserting other instruments, or push an object through the passage. Bougies are typically handheld and flexible, and are available in rod-shaped (hollow cylindrical) forms made of metal, plastic, or rubber, in various sizes and shapes. The tips of these instruments are available in different shapes, including bulbous and egg-shaped tips. The instrument also allows another very small device, approximately the size of a thread, to be inserted through its hollow center. This instrument also features a balloon at its tip.
