Uncuffed Endotracheal Tube

An uncuffed endotracheal tube is a type of endotracheal tube that does not have an inflatable cuff and is used primarily in pediatric patients. This type of tube does not prevent gastric contents from entering the lungs; however, it may help reduce the risk of pressure-related injury to the airway and vocal cords.

Function

An uncuffed endotracheal tube maintains an open airway primarily through proper sizing and close adaptation of the tube to the patient’s tracheal diameter. It is commonly used in pediatric patients and in situations where the risk of aspiration of gastric contents into the lungs is low. The tube is inserted into the patient’s trachea through the mouth or nose and connected to a respiratory support device.
