These thermometers are designed to estimate skin temperature (underarm and forehead) by measuring infrared radiation emitted by the body at the specific measurement site. The short interval between measurements provides a method for determining skin surface temperature by measuring different skin locations over a short period of time, such as before performing EMG (electromyography) to record electrical muscle activity.
