Introduction and general information Cuffed Tracheostomy Tube
Cuffed tracheostomy tubes are used for patients who require assisted ventilation, including ventilation through a mask or mechanical ventilator. The tube is sealed and secured in place using a cuff, which is also referred to as a balloon, located near the lower part of the tube. The cuff blocks airflow around the tube and helps provide effective oxygen delivery to the patient, allowing air to flow in and out through the tube.
The pilot balloon is connected to the cuff and remains outside the patient’s body. It is used to monitor and maintain the appropriate amount of air inside the cuff and to prevent overinflation or underinflation.
