Bone Wax (Surgical Bone Wax)

Surgical bone wax is a combination of beeswax, paraffin, and isopropyl palmitate, a wax softening agent. This wax is opaque and has a waxy odor. It is recommended for controlling bleeding from bone surfaces during surgical procedures.

The wax achieves local bone hemostasis by acting as a mechanical barrier (tamponade). It does not act biochemically and is non-absorbable. Surgical bone wax is supplied sterile in individual foil packets, each containing 2.5 grams, and is separately packaged. The wax is sterilized using gamma radiation.

The packets should be opened immediately before use to minimize the possibility of contamination and excessive drying, and the wax should be used immediately. The wax should not be resterilized or exposed to excessive heat. This wax is opaque and has a waxy odor. It is recommended for controlling bleeding from bone surfaces and for use in wound closure.
