| Gels, such as polymer-based hydrogels, are designed to act as temporary barriers against postoperative adhesion formation between tissues and organs. These gels are applied to the surface of tissues and organs at the end of surgery, before the procedure is completed, and are usually absorbed by the body within a relatively short period, such as several days or weeks.
Postoperative anti-adhesion gels are commonly used as adhesion barriers in spinal surgery, such as laminectomy, as well as in tendon surgery and around nerves. Some types of these gels are also used in pelvic, gynecological, abdominal, and implant-related procedures. |
Intrauterine adhesions (IUA) and postoperative adhesion recurrence are common problems among women of reproductive age. Hyaluronic acid gel may help prevent IUA and improve fertility. This product is formulated and manufactured under the brand name Hilaria. Analyses have indicated that the use of hyaluronic acid gel during intrauterine procedures may be particularly beneficial for patients at high risk of IUA. However, larger and well-designed future studies are needed to further confirm its effectiveness and safety in preserving fertility.
Among various polymers investigated as antibacterial coatings, hyaluronic acid and some of its composites have an established long-term safety profile and demonstrated potential to reduce bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. Adhesive intestinal obstruction (AIO) is recognized as a challenging problem in abdominal surgery, with increasing incidence among children and pregnant women worldwide. Intraperitoneal adhesions commonly develop after abdominal surgery and may lead to intestinal obstruction. Current approaches to adhesion prevention include proper surgical techniques and the use of anti-adhesion barriers. One commonly used anti-adhesion material is hyaluronic acid. This material has demonstrated potential as an intervention for adhesive intestinal obstruction in children and may contribute to further progress toward preventing postoperative adhesions following abdominal and intrauterine surgery.
