Ambu Bag

Ambu Bag, or BVM (abbreviation for Bag-Valve-Mask), is an air reservoir made of silicone or plastic that is used to provide positive-pressure ventilation in conditions such as pneumothorax or during artificial ventilation in CPR. The device is equipped with a one-way valve that allows the reservoir bag to refill automatically while preventing air from escaping.

• The device is used in the operating room until the patient is connected to an electric ventilator.
• It was first invented in 1953 by a German engineer, Dr. Holger Hesse, and was introduced to the market under the trademark Ambu Bag, which is still commonly used as its name.
• BVMs are available in volumes of 500 mL, 600 mL, 1500 mL, and 2000 mL.

An Ambu Bag consists of several components. The most important components include the oxygen connector, reservoir bag, and valve system. Special cleaning and disinfecting agents are used to clean and disinfect these components.

• The one-way valve helps the Ambu Bag refill and prevents air from escaping from the bag.
• Make sure that the Ambu Bag is transparent and properly connected to the oxygen connector. The reservoir bag is used to increase the oxygen concentration delivered to the patient.

How Does an Ambu Bag Work?

The Ambu Bag is used with a mask placed over the patient’s nose and mouth to provide oxygen. To achieve a higher oxygen concentration, the oxygen flow through the mask is generally set to 10 liters per minute.
